|Learning outcome/ competencies|
Due to the growth in interdisciplinary and inter-culturally diverse teams and the increasing amount of project work, efficient group facilitation is becoming more and more important. All too often however, work meetings are perceived as unproductive and a waste of time by those involved.
In this module, you will learn the basics of facilitation methods and how to conduct meetings.
First, you will reflect on your role as facilitator and the development stages of working groups. You will then learn about working with the relevant tools of a facilitator (the metaplan, flip charts, cards and charts, etc.) which will help you to visualize complex content to suit specific target groups. You will also learn to recognize group processes and to facilitate them in a targeted manner.
Processes which can be detected in groups are predominantly influenced by the individuals involved. For this reason, you will learn to analyze and assess the types of individuals within your working groups in the context of their positive and negative influences on the work process. In terms of facilitating, this will help you either use their respective contribution or minimize the influence of nonconstructive participants.
You will study the emergence of conflict, its process and duration and ways of dealing with it in order to be able to identify it early on where it is negatively impacting a process.
In the last part of the module, you will prepare a facilitated meeting and conduct a sample facilitation in teams of two. You will be expected to use and test all the tools and content acquired over the course of the module.
On completion of the module you will be able to plan working group meetings in a goal and solution oriented manner, to facilitate them and record their content.
